We left about 9 am slow time. I wanted to head out early, before rush hour, but that didn't work out. So we left after. About 2 hours in I could feel my legs tightening up. They were sore when I awoke from all the walking the day before.I said to Bonnie that we would stop at the next exit and stretch, maybe grab a drink. First the "attractions" sign came up. Did that really say "worlds largest wind chime"? Anyone that knows me, knows that I'll stop for giant anything. (Childhood trauma. Daddy never stopped for anything.)
We get to the bottom of the exit ramp and there's maybe 6 giant things listed. We follow the signs. In the true sense of a road trip there always needs to be one tacky tourist trap and this is it. (And the girls thought South of the Border was weird.)
It turns out that Casey, Illinois has turned their shuttered downtown into the "worlds largest" and supersized items. They are inside and outside. Most have some sort of bible verse on them so maybe this was all started by a church. You really can't see it unless you're up close.
So the certified "worlds largest" are the rocking chair, wind chime, golf tee, mailbox, wooden clogs, teeter totter, pitch fork, knitting needles and a crochet hook. Supersized items include a Minion, a spinning top, corn, teeter toter, book worm, token, pencil and I'm not sure what else.
It worked. The town is not dead. There are gift stores, ice cream palors, and soda jerks. Not the most useful items in the world unless you are geared to hungry, curious, travelers. We spent nearly an hour and a half walking around this town and got maybee 1.5 miles in. Not bad for a rest stop.
The rest of the day was spent in the car and in traffic. The worse we have encountered. We arrived at nearly 8 pm, regular time, with a meal/gas stop.
