we're gonna pop some tags.

Over the weekend Lydia said she needed to go to the thrift store in Fountain Hill (Via, by the Wawa). I said I'd go along as long as we walked there. I am not driving a mile.

Today she had off, and I'm off in the mornings.  It's very windy. But we went anyway.

I must admit that going to the thrift store was tough. We headed out Itaska walking into the strong winds, and then out Broadway. The wind gusts hit hard into our faces. It was so cold, and it took our breath away. Especially by St. Ursula's Church. Waiting for the walk light to cross Delaware was an exercise in tolerance.

Ultimately we made it. Lydia found what she was looking for and we headed home with the wind on our backs. We went out Delaware and down Bishopthorpe.

Miles/Steps:         1.5 miles (really?)
Weather:              4, winds 40-50 mph and sunny

Extra:                   I kept singing "I'm gonna pop some tags, I've got $20 in my pocket." I think I was driving Lyds crazy. And yes, I had $20 in my pocket.

omg i did the whole class

A few weeks ago when I was feeling more out of shape and lazy than normal I spent an hour or so looking for alternative exercises. I need to jump start my metabolism , especially since I'm eating so poorly. One thing I had heard about from my elderly volkssport ladies is chair aerobics and chair yoga. One hundred percent no impact on joints. I decided to look it up.

To my surprise only one place offered it: The Yoga Loft. Now the last time I was there —in July, 2010 — I did not have a good experience and never went back. I was wary, but I really wanted to try it. At that time I was doing free T'ai Chi at a church on Saturday's but that group ultimately ended. Then I went to the Bethlehem Township Community Center, but that one ended as well. Ultimately I gave up on T'ai Chi. The problem with that class was it was all lecture. Not a class. Not what I was looking for.

I left 45 minutes to walk down there and walk up the three flights of stairs. I was early. When I arrived at the Yoga Loft nothing had really changed in nearly a decade. It looked pretty much was exactly the same.

Since I was going for chair yoga  I didn't bring a mat. I needed one. You put the chair on the mat. Thankfully they had ones to loan. Next to each chair there was many items—a strap, blocks, bolsters and a blanket. I thought to myself, what have I gotten myself into?

Most of the class was around my age. There were a few instructors coming for training, and a few young people with injuries that are sidelined from traditional exercise. Most of the attendees had a medical reason for being there—arthritis, replaced joints, back injuries, cancer... . One lady I talked to was a former paramedic with back issues because of all the years of lifting people.  She was worried about doing the class, but her daughter insisted she come along. It would be okay. And for her it was. She said she hadn't felt that good in years.

Now to be honest, I thought ... at first ... it was a horrible replay of the T'ai Chi fiasco. Lots of talking. But it was a two hour class, and she kept saying we'll have a full class.  And we did.

And it was yoga. All the moves were there, but you were seated the entire time. She did demo, then we did the set, and then we chatted. Repeat. She asked everyone their name and their issue. Paramedic lady went to do one of the moves and she called out, no not you. You do it this way. I used everything but the blanket. That mostly was to make the chair more comfy. She suggested a padded folding chair.

To do this yoga you sit in the front third of the chair. Posture is really important. But then it's important in all yoga. I worked up a sweat, and my upper body is sore. I felt like I worked out. I did all of the poses. Everyone. And only modified two of the leg ones. I would do it again, but $20 for a yoga class is expensive. There are a ton of videos on YouTube—some maybe not so good—but I know I won't do them. I do better with a buddy.

The two hour class took two hours and twenty minutes. Then I headed down the stairs, and started walking home. On a sad note I was hungry, and the leftovers I planned for supper were moldy. Oh well.

Namaste.

Miles/Steps:         3, plus a mile this morning
Weather:              38, overcast

snowshoeing in slatington

It snowed earlier in the week, and then it rained, and froze, and ultimately was almost 60 degrees. This weeks weather has been a roller coaster.

A Tail on the Trail event on the Slatington Heritage Trail, the trail has some snow cover, but mostly it was ice. I was sure today's snowshoe adventure would be a hike, but I couldn't see how after seeing the trail conditions. I was pleasantly surprised that we were snowshoeing. Only about 8 people came. All women, and one tween. The first half hour was all talk—about Wildlands, the history of snowshoeing, and dressing for winter outdoor activities.

We walked about a mile to the turnpike and turned around and came back.  Some areas -- were the sun was strong -- were not snow covered and we walked in the grass.

This is the second time in a week I've seen a full body picture of me. The first time I blamed it on the angle. Denial is strong. Even though I have a lot of layers on, you can see how fat I've gotten (+30). All the weight Lydia and Bonnie are losing I'm catching. I look many months pregnant.

Now look at my feet. I'm barely on the shoe. I apparently am walking with duck feet headed out. This is not good. We adjusted my shoes a half dozen times and they always went back to this position. Especially on the right. Remember when I was a kid how I walked on the sides of my feet and had to wear those hideous red shoes?

I was one of the last ones to return. I had a hard time getting my shoes off because I had to do it standing up. Balance is always an issue.

It was a fun morning.

Miles/Steps:         2
Weather:              38 and sunny

Extra:                   While we were gone someone built a fire in the fire pit to make s'mores. I heard the word s'more and headed over there. There was water on top of the ice and I step, slipped and went crash, face first.I broke my fall with my wrists. Six inches closer and I would have hit the fire pit. I'm fine. But as always, my wrists and knees hurt.

I was soaked. And muddy. My plans to stop at the Dorney Park job fair were cancelled. Casual is one thing. Looking like you did a mud run is a total other thing.

good news / bad news / worse news

The Good News: EverWalk is coming to Philly Labor Day weekend. I've been waiting for this since EverWalk began in 2016. I had always planned to do the entire 135-mile week. This year it begins with a walking tour of Philly historic sights and ends with a DC historic capital. It's called the Liberty Walk from the original nation's capital to the current one.

The Bad News: It's the week before Labor Day. School begins the week before. I can't do the full week. Okay, I can liver with that. I'll just do the 3-day weekend.

The Worse News: It's Labor Day Weekend. I am committed to Writing Wrongs from Friday Night thru Monday morning.

Drats.

Right now I'm hoping for the first day in Philly.

I generally don't work Mondays in the fall term. I generally have very long Tuesdays and Thursdays instead. However, if the Art Institute closes, and I need to find another job, that might be out as well. Even if it doesn't close, I'm probably going to need to find an additional job. I'm thinking of applying at Dorney Park for the summer. Pay sucks, but I'll get to do different types of Graphic Design like vinyl cutting and large format out print. And I'll probably be walking my ass off. If I'm going to be hot, at least I can earn money while sweating. Another option is nights at a warehouse.

I sent Angel an email to see if she wanted to do it, or train with me. It will be a lot harder to walk 20 miles in one day 10 years after I did the 3-Day, but it will be good to have a goal. I weighed myself, and I've gained 30 pounds in a year. I think it's called stress eating. And admittedly I am exercising less.

Does anyone else want to come?

golv: tatamy on groundhog day

Today was the Get Out Lehigh Valley walk at Mill Creek Park in Tatamy. It was also Groundhog Day. Phil, by the way, predicted an early spring. It's been a hard week with sub freezing temperatures so it was welcome news. Of course Phil has a 39% accuracy rate, about the same as the weather people. And spring will come March 21 — the temperature be damned.

It was still pretty cold today when we began. By Tuesday it's supposed to work it's way back up to the high 50s. Then by the end of the week snow. The weather is wacky. Mother Nature must be in menopause.

I didn't walk much this week with single digit temperatures and double digit negative wind chills. It wasn't as horrible here as in Chicago. For that I am grateful.

This is part of the Palmer Rail Trail so it is an out and back walk. It was paved and it was plowed, which was wonderful. Not super exciting, but it was beautiful. We went west for about a half mile, and then came back and went east for another mile, past the old grist mill into Tatamy. The group stopped for pizza. I just turned around and came back.

Miles/Steps:         3+
Weather:              8 when I started, 28 an hour and a half later, mostly sunny, not too windy
Wildlife:               3 pairs of mallards, about a dozen Canadian geese, and one wood duck.

Bathrooms:          locked, it's winter
Extra:                   I found this scooter in the snow. I think someone forgot it. It looked parked. I don't think it is broken.
