hazy, hot and humid

It's been a hazy, hot and humid week here in Lake Wobegon. Oh wait. Wrong radio show. Wrong state. Wrong trail.

But it has been hazy, hot and humid all week. My niece is living with me, and she has a 75 pound dog covered in thick fur. He is miserable. And old. And sick. I managed to get the ancient air conditioner working to help him out a bit. I run it only during the hottest part of the day, since it sucks up electric like a vacuum cleaner. My electric bill will probably double. Oh well. Better than dead dog, right?

Lydia and I decided to walk in Hellertown. I was fairly sure the rail trail was shady in the morning. But I also thought we could check out Woodland Hills Preserve. As we rolled into the empty parking lot, I knew for certain there was no shade here. Though they have improved it. There is a sign, and a trail head box. The Boy Scouts must be busy.

We headed back into town and parked in Water Street Park, then took the trail towards Meadow Street. The first section was about 65% shady, the next section, probably close to 85%. Coming back, that first section was probably close to 45% shade. Clearly, you need to walk that before 10 am in the summer. We didn't get there till about 9:15. (Lydia is not an early bird like me. I'm the one that's up and ready to go at 5:30 in the morning). Going to the preserve also set us back 20 minutes.

We made a stop at the grist mill park, and I sat on the edge of the Pony Bridge. I was doing my best sexy model look. Didn't work. I might give this shirt-dress to Bonnie. She no longer has jelly rolls. Maybe it will look better on her.

Miles/Steps:       2.5
Weather:            88, sunny, hazy, hot and humid
Bathrooms:        none use
Wildlife:       monarch and swallowtail butterflies, a couple of mallards, a female cardinal, a shitload of geese and their shit at the grist mill park. There had to be 100.
Extra:                 Water Street Park has a great Little Free Library box. It's huge and generally stuffed full. Without work, I haven't been doing a lot of fun extra things. I m trying to be responsible with my money. But frankly, I'm bored to tears. So Wednesday I bought a novel. (Now $10). Thursday I was done with it. One reason I picked this trail was for that LFL. The box had 5 books in it—Chechov, Walden, Camus, and two kids books. I left empty handed. I just wanted a couple "beach" books. (Who'd put those titles in a LFL anyway?) I need to find a box on tomorrows walk.

Thursday was Independence Day #242. Will we make it to #250? I have my doubts.

Anyway, heatwave #2 was in it's 4th day. We needed to pick up Sharon on Main Street and then do a short walk, somewhere shady. We chose the Colonial Industrial Quarter because we knew we could park Sharon under a tree while we walked. Then. we moved into Johnston Park, and looped our way back.

This is a pretty typical walk. Nothing exciting. Nothing new. Lots of goose shit but no geese.
