golv: wy-hit-tuk

For the second time in less than two weeks I found myself at Wy-hit-tuk Park. This time for a Get Out Lehigh Valley event. Debbie went with me. We met there, it was silly to carpool.

I learned that "Wy-Hit-Tuk" means "River" in Leni Lenape, the Native Americans who lived throughout the Delaware River Basin at the time of European contact. I also learned that the pavilion and amphitheater are adaptive reuses of aggregate bins that remained from the previous owner. And about the different kinds of locks. But since I wasn't taking notes I remember nothing. Probably if I heard the last I would.

The walk headed south thru the park, past the pavilion, bathrooms, and thru the campgrounds. Then we walked over a bridge and headed to the trail. We only walked about a half mile before we turned around and headed back.

We went past where we entered, and past the bridge to the parking lot, and headed to the overflow. The canal and the river still looked like Willy Wonka's Chocolate River, but there was no water on the overflow. I was a tad disappointed.

Miles/Steps:     2.25
Weather:           85, sunny, not as humid.
Bathrooms:       None used.
Wildlife:           a pair of turtles. One was camera shy. It's the first time I've seen turtles on the Delaware side of the towpath.
