may days #2

Normally my first shoe pick of the season would be with feet. But my feet are nasty. Can't wait for a pedicure.

When my sister/roommate went into the hospital a week ago I declared that I was not going to the grocery store until she came back. (I usually go several times a week.) I planned to eat-down the contents of the freezer and fridge. The roomie is a very fussy eater, hence all the trips to the store. But when people offer me food I take it. There are very few things I won't eat. But often it sits in the freezer because she won't eat it.

I've done a good job so far. One day I found a forgotten head of cauliflower and made a loaded cauliflower steak. Not healthy, but delicious. (Roasted cauliflower slab with bacon, pecans, cheese). Then someone had given me a head of cabbage so I made the world's largest pot of halupki soup. I ate it for dinner, gave two quarts to another sister, and still have three in the freezer.  Today I'll heat up some mac and cheese in a frying pan. The cheese melts and it gets all crispy. Freezer mac and cheese is almost better than fresh mac and cheese. Plus I'll throw in some of that leftover cauliflower.

This morning I was contemplating where to walk and it was a non-roommate sister (actually roomies twin) called: Could you go to the grocery store for me? Drats. So much for my promise. But I decided to go. I can't have her starving because of my silly challenge. And besides, it gave me a destination. The real challenge would be not buying anything for myself. It's getting harder. I'm running out of dairy, bread, and greens. On the positive side, I'll be able to clean the fridge.

So I headed out in my berks and face mask. I was styling. I went out Itaska and the trash was overwhelming. There was an entire box of nicotine patches strewn over the course of a block. I looked online and the cheapest I found was $30. Who throws $30 on the sidewalk? Clearly few people on Itaska use a garbage can. I thought about heading home and getting gloves and a bag, but I decided to do that walk tomorrow. Maybe I'll take two bags, one for recyclables, and one for trash.

It's been just over a week since I've been in my neighborhood supermarket-dive. I was greeted by the "you need a mask" sign. They had already moved everything around so that you must follow the arrows to shop. It's a nice way to get more exercise walking up and down the aisles. There was one check-out line that fed all the registers. They even put up acrylic shields.

I succeeded in not buying anything for myself. Frankly, it would have been too much to carry home. Maybe I should take Lydia's cart next time.  This sign was at one of the bodegas on the way home on Broadway. The one at the supermarket was handwritten but generic. It didn't warrant a picture.

Miles/Steps:              2
Weather:                   66, sunny
PPE found:                4 masks including 1 washable one, 2  DOZEN individual gloves in clear, white, light and dark blue and teal, a pair of men's undies, box of condoms, and at least a dozen nicotine patches. Okay, they aren't PPE but they are notable trash.
