I can't stand walking in the hood anymore. At least for a while. When you recognize the litter and when people have garbage out, it's way past time to take a different route...for a while.
I've heard from a few people that there are now turtles in the canal at Sand Island. I've also been told about one that ways 60 pounds. He'd be a snapping turtle. Keeps the goose population down. I decided to check it out.
I drove to sand island, parked at the ice house, and headed thru the island to pick up the D&L. The first thing I noticed was the bridge construction. Look they are putting up the structure to pour the stairs. Be still my heart. I will not miss the old ones.
After crossing the footbridge over the Monocacy, I headed down the D&L towards Freemansburg. As advertised, turtles. Lots of turtles. All sunbathing. I walked as far as the Minis Trail bridge and turned around and came back.
The big guy was no where in site. There was a man fishing, so I asked him about the giant turtle. It turns out that José and his uncle were fishing in the canal, and uncle caught him. They thought they were pulling in a tire or something. Seeing it was a giant turtle, they left him loose. Now fishermen telling fish stories is nothing new. But he seemed sincere. Where he was standing was a good place to see him. But the weeds and algae make great cover. If I brought a chair and watched the canal for an hour, I'd probably see her come up for air. No thanks. I think I need to go early or later. I think it was just too hot.

I also tried ... and failed .. at a little geocaching while on the island.
Sunday I had walked in the neighborhood, and the storm brought down this tree. I had to go out in the street and walk around it. It's now Tuesday and it's still there.
