Saturday I had planed to do a Get Out Lehigh Valley walk in Laurey's Station. But because of C19 you must register. They are only taking limited participants. I was on the waiting list. These events start at 10 am. I checked my email at 7:30 and there was nothing so I put on a skort and planned to get ready for the new term. There is so much work with going online.
I was doing the dishes when my sister said your phone is ringing. It was 9:08. It was an unknown number but I answered like I always do. I never know if it is a student or not. It was Christine, the walk coordinator. Was I still interested in the walk, there was a cancellation. I almost said yes. But realistically it would take a minimum of thirty minutes to get there and I would need to change. I'd just be cutting it way to close. I said no.
Sunday I had plans to go to an event at Hugh Moore Park. It's a series of three walking lectures called Iron and Industrial History walks. The next one goes the other direction and is about water.
It appears that Hugh Moore Park was a brownfield— it is the site of one of America's first industrial parks. The write up said we'd see ruins and I really wanted too. I walk a lot on this section of the canal and it would be nice to know what I'm looking at.
Hidden behind a lot of weeds was an old aqueduct. And above is a structure that drains the canal into the river when it gets too full. I already knew that the canal had to switch sides of the river. The things you learn in Girl Scouts that stay with you.
We walked on the canal path spur that goes into the park and to the lock tenders house. Because of C19 the boat is not running. I was surprised that the canal wasn't higher with the major storms we've been having. We came back on the D&L and thru the parks path.
I was intent on staying with the group but social distancing. In the process, while we were on the spur, I brushed up against stinging nettles. My poor legs have been raw with heat rash for weeks. They did not need stinging nettles. I wanted to jump into the canal, but I didn't.
After returning to the car there was a tick crawling up my leg. I needed to drop off something at Angels so I checked for ticks in front of her house. I found the second tick.
It was a good, yet painful, walk.
Wildlife: geese and monarch butterflies. Do the ticks count?
